Day 1: Winston Salem to Louisville, KY

The 2017 Winston Salem Grand Western Tour started bright and early this morning at Brookstown Inn. The tour members checked in, loaded their huge bags, and claimed a seat on the bus all before 6:15 am! A big thanks to all of the parents and families for helping us get on the road! There were mixed emotions as we said our goodbyes but everyone was excited for the amazing adventure ahead!

At the sound of the bus horn, we headed out of Winston Salem and traveled through Virginia, West Virginia and into Kentucky. About midday, the group stopped for a picnic lunch from Mrs. Pumpkins Bakery Deli (the cookies were phenomenal).

Our first destination was Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. We took a tour of the massive stadium that has a record attendance of over 170,000 fans. The track also contains the largest 4K video screen in the world. The screen is larger than 3 NBA basketball courts and cost over 12 million dollars. It would be quite amazing to catch a race on a jumbotron that size! The group also visited the Kentucky Derby Museum and watched an impressive 360 degree panoramic video about its history.

After checking into the hotel the bus journeyed to Joe Huber's Family Farm and Restaurant. It's a bit off the beaten path but that's what makes it so special. We drove through some beautiful Indiana countryside and enjoyed a farm fresh dinner of fried chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes! The evening ended with time by the pond, swinging, and a game of Ninja and Duck-Duck-Goose.
