Day 20: San Francisco: Alcatraz

Boarding the ferry to Alcatraz bright and early this morning proved to be a great choice. Not only did our group miss the large crowds and get a spectacular and interactive audio tour of the maximum security penitentiary, but we even spotted and snagged some selfies with HGTV's "Property Brother," Drew Scott! Many of the girls were star struck, including chaperones Molly and Elizabeth. For many of the students this was their first ferry ride, and they were shocked by how cold the wind was whipping off the bay waves.

The audio tour guided us through the halls, cells, and facilities where America's most famous criminals were held behind bars. We got an up close and personal account of the various escape attempts as well as some spectacular views of the city of San Francisco from "The Rock."

The crew was then given free time to wander and explore about the city in groups of at least 6. We gave them specific instructions yesterday as well as today reiterating the importance of strength in numbers in this extremely busy city. I think it's safe to say most groups found shopping and the city to be an experience they both enjoyed and respected.

When they checked in before dinner, we got a plethora of stories from their afternoon excursions. A group of guys thoroughly enjoyed watching an Apple Store artist on his iPad using an apple pen creating a masterpiece.

Another group spoke about the best lunch ever, being a burger bar in the 7th story of Macy's with a view of Union Square. Lombard Street, trolley rides and Uber rides were other favorites mentioned about the day. One group even ventured all the way to Golden Gate Park!!

Dinner choices ranged from sushi to the famous Boudin Bakery to seafood and more. A few group members were even able to join relatives living in the Bay Area for their own dinner dates! What a truly remarkable day for our youngsters! One in which will live on in their memories forever.
